DOOR MATERIAL AND STYLE OPTIONS

August 7th, 2008

Door Material and Style Options

Doors are an important factor in determining a home’s style and functionality. There is a huge selection of doors to choose from and understanding your requirements will help you select each door’s material, style and operation.

There are many different styles of doors to pick from and most doors fall into four main categories:

  • Panel Doors: these are made of wood panels that are held in place by wood stiles and rails made from plywood, solid wood, metal or glass.
  • Solid Core Doors: these doors have solid lumber cores, compressed wood fiber cores or rigid foam board that is laminated to plywood or metal facing.
  • Hollow Metal Insulated Doors: these doors are made of fabricated and welded sheet metal, with mineral or cement board usually added as a core.
  • Hollow Core Wood Doors: plywood or press board face and honeycomb wood or paper interior core.

Exterior doors

Exterior doors may be made of timber, aluminum or vinyl. The different types of exterior doors include, front entry doors, back doors, french doors, sliding glass, and patio doors. Panels are raised inserts that are framed into the door. These are fitted into grooves in the door, which allows the wood to expand and contract without damaging the door.

Exterior doors are constructed from wood, steel, fiberglass, aluminum, or a combination of these materials. Exterior doors may be flushed, paneled, and with or without glass. The standard exterior entry door is 3 feet wide and 6 feet 8 inches tall.

Interior doors

Interior doors are typically constructed from lighter materials than exterior doors since they are not required to provide security or be weather resistant. Interior doors are usually smaller than the standard exterior door. Widths of 30 or 32 inches are commonly found. There are several types of interior doors available, including swinging doors, pocket, folding andĀ gliding. Higher quality interior doors are made from solid timber, either softwood or hardwood. Moulded interior doors are made from compressed particle board, with a smooth skin.

I have a Masonite exterior door with internal blinds that do not work well at all. They will not go all the way up and down I have tried to re-engage the magnets but still can not get them to go all the way down. Any suggestions would be appreaciated. thanks
