FIBERGLASS DOORS vs. WOOD ENTRY DOORS

March 3rd, 2008

FIBERGLASS DOORSВ vs. WOOD ENTRY DOORS

What are the advantages or disadvantages to fiberglass doors?

Fiberglass doors are almost always a better choice. They will not warp, twist or do any other unwanted acrobatics that wood doors can do in some climates. They have a better R factor than even a solid wood door. Basically a fiberglass door has a fiberglass skin 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick depending on manufacturer. The space between the fiberglass skin is filled with foam therefore a second advantage of fiberglass doors – they are nice and lite. Easy on the hinges. Usually fiberglass doors are molded with some raised or recessed paneling. That is done for for strength than appearance. You can get them nice and smooth or with wood grain. Probably the best fiberglass doors are made by Therma-True.

We have three fiberglass doors andВ one front wood entry door. I like the wooden door much better!! Easier to keep painted, washed and looking nice. The paint on the fiberglass ones seems to be discolored or just won’t wash clean. Never looks as good as when we put them in. They are only 10 years old.

Another advantage of fiberglass doors: some fiberglass doors have a wood edge which can be trimmed for those difficult-to-fit jobs, such as when the opening is a bit low, the flooring raised too high, or a very thick rug is impeding the closing of the door. This gets over one perception that fiberglass doors are impossible to modify. Although a wood door really is much more amenable to major cutting jobs.
