Installing Windows with Glass Blocks

Installing Windows with Glass Blocks Can Be Fun

Installing windows with glass blocks is a great project and is rather fun to do. Installing windows with glass blocks is very different than installing standard windows. So to start the process you should draw a quick sketch of the window opening or where the blocks are going. This will be used to purchase the grid-work for your glass blocks.

You should measure up and down, then side to side. Do this twice so you are sure you have the right measurements. Remember that the frame of the current window will be removed. So make sure your measurements are correct. This is critical to obtain the right size glass grid blocks for your window.

Be extremely careful when transporting your glass blocks because glass can chip or break with one wrong move. When you get your materials home you should remove the window frame. Some frames come out easier than others so don’t get frustrated.

One the frame is removed you should clean your work area well. Dry fit the windows to make sure your blocks are going to fit. Any time you are installing windows it is a good idea to use shims. Your shims should go on the bottom frame and then dampen the jamb that you can see with a little water. Take your cement mortar with sand and place some onto the sill.

Now you can move your window onto the shims. Also shim the top and jamb. Make sure they are in tightly. Any time you are installing windows you should make sure that they are plumb and square. If you want to make adjustments now is the time to do it.

You are now at the point where you can pack your cement mortar around the window. Do this everywhere except the top. Clean off any mortar from the glass with a damp sponge before it dries.

After the cement begins to harden you can remove the shims and fill in the holes. Once your window is completely dry you can caulk the top with silicone.
