Questions about Replacement Window Installation

December 19th, 2006

Wondering how much disruption and mess is involved in having replacement windows installed? You’d be surprised at how quick and painless it can be. Here are some common installation questions.

  1. After I pick out my replacement windows, how long will it take before they are installed? There are many replacement window styles that are considered “in stock” and can be installed quickly. Other styles–or odd sizes–require a two- to eight-week lead time, depending on the manufacturer.
  2. How should I prepare before the contractor arrives? It’s best to clear furniture and other household items from around the window area. The contractors will need some room to get around the windows and possibly tear out trim and sashes.
  3. How much mess will there be? As with any home improvement project, the answer depends on the extent of the work. If you are replacing windows of the same size, it’s possible that the remodeling contractor can do the work with little disruption to the surrounding walls and trim. However, in some cases there will be some dust and possibly wood trim that splinters when the old windows are removed.
  4. Should I keep children and pets out of the room while the work is being done? Yes. Because this home improvement work involves taking out windows, there will be times when there are large openings in the walls. This can present a dangerous situation for animals and small children.
  5. What happens if the contractor finds problems with the window openings or if the new windows don’t fit? This is a problem that window contractors deal with occasionally, particularly in older houses. When interviewing home improvement contractors, ask how they handle this type of problem. Look for a remodeling contractor who:
    • Is a skilled carpenter
    • Knows how to frame window openings to shrink a large opening
    • Understands the style and proportion needed to make the windows look balanced on the house
    • Can solve problems and come up with creative solutions

There are many questions that arise when planning a replacement window project. Ask your remodeling contractor what to expect and how to deal with common surprises. You’ll then be better prepared for the window installation.
